Try Something New

SUMMARY

This project focused on creating two posters that encouraged college students to “try something new”, one utilizing type and the other utilizing type and image.

SOLUTION

In this project, the chosen endeavor for students to explore was a soccer ball sewing workshop. The creative process began with brainstorming words associated with soccer and sewing, followed by the development of diverse concepts. Emphasizing quantity, I generated multiple options to explore various avenues. These concepts were gradually refined until arriving at the final two designs. Both posters feature a headline with a double meaning that cleverly ties into the accompanying imagery, enhancing their visual impact and message.

THREAD THE NEEDLE

The poster cleverly merges the worlds of soccer and the soccer ball sewing workshop through a playful twist on the phrase 'THREAD THE NEEDLE.' This phrase, commonly used in soccer to describe a precise pass or shot, takes on a dual meaning here, symbolizing both the intricacies of the game and also the process involved in sewing a soccer ball. The text itself is woven together like thread, visually representing the act of sewing, while the vbrant colors draw from the grass on a soccer field and the bright jerseys often seen in the sport.

CUT IN

The poster depicts a pair of scissors cutting into leather that also double as the legs of a soccer player. The overall design mirrors the effect of assembling and collaging various fabric pieces, as if you were in the initial stages of crafting a soccer ball. And finally the type plays on the words "CUT IN and create" Representing both cutting into some fabric and getting creative in sewing but also cutting in to the box and using your creativity on the field.
